Grisel Brody, age 10
This early Scottish girl is delicately stitched and filled with traditional spot motifs and featuring a majority of red and green. Center top of the sampler are her parent's initials joined by a heart. To the left a Scottish-style peacock and to the right a multi-coloured Queen's stitched God's eye pattern balance the upper section. The center of the sampler is taken up with her clearly labeled verse, "The Ten Commandments in Metre", every other word stitched in red and green.
The rest of the sampler is filled with birds and floral motifs suitable to the time frame, including a pair of boxers just between the God's eye pattern and a Queen's stitched pyramid of strawberries. The band along the bottom includes familial initials (IB, IB, MB, IB, AB, AB, MB), floral urns, and a single unit of what is typically an undulating carnation band. The substantial thread loss is not due to the colour of the thread but because Grisel used such fine thread.
Grisel signed her sampler along the bottom. Whilst undated, she at least let us know she was 10 when she stitched it. Looking at the photographs of the back you can really see the brightness of the red and green and the fineness of the threads.
Size (W x H): 13 1/8 x 10 1/2 inches
Stitches: Cross, cross-over-one, double running, eyelet, Queen
