Felitia Lantz, age 13
This third sampler from Tazewell County, Illinois was a rare find, made even more so by the verifiable family connection to Emeline Lantz.
This sampler feature the same house, spotted dogs, trees, dangling clusters of grapes, phrasing of the inscription, and border - practically identical except for the vanity removal of the date. Given Felitia's birth date, this sampler was done in 1837.
Size (W x H): 21 1/2 x 20 1/4 inches
Stitches: Cross, satin
Media: Silk on linen
Felitia was born 18 February 1824 in Boone, Kentucky, the eighth of ten children of Martin and Mary Lantz. Interestingly the birth records clearly indicate the family was Baptist.
Felitia married Cornelius Hinsey, a farmer, on 8 November 1840 in Pekin, Illinois. They had seven children -- kept trying until a boy was born: Clara (1847), Virginia (1850), Blanche (1853), Maude (1856), Julia (1857), Ella (1860) and Ernest (1864). Felitia died 11 July 1896 and is buried in the Haines Cemetery in Tazewell County.

A handwritten note of ownership accompanied Felitia's sampler and contained some incorrect information. The note is the order of ownership of the sampler, and claimed that Felitia had a daughter Mary Virginia Lantz. Obviously, since Felitia married Joseph Hinsey, the daughter's name is Mary Virginia Hinsey. Mary V. married Louis Bequeaith (Beckwith) in 1873; a daughter Grace was born and the last name appears to have changed officially to Beckwith. Grace was the aunt of Dorothy Mabel Beckwith who received the sampler in a will from Grace in 1973. Dorothy was married to one of Felitia's grandsons.
