Sarah Ann Westcott, age 12
Sarah's sampler is an excellent example and represents the best characteristics of this group: the composition and execution and excellent, the vocabulary of stitches is strong and she included familial event inscriptions. As with all the others, there are alphabets, a religious verse, internal zigzag border pattern and a strawberry pattern border around the outer edges.

Sarah Ann Westcott was the daughter was the daughter of John Bunyan Westcott and Elizabeth (Parvin) Westcott of Millville, Cumberland County, New Jersey. John and Elizabeth were married in 1827. After Elizabeth died in 1830, John married her sister Clarissa, and they became the parents of two sons. Interestingly, some records indicate that John's sons were born in Ohio, at the same time that Sarah was still living in New Jersey, perhaps attending an academy.
In 1851, Sarah married Timothy Downham, an oysterman and they lived in nearby Cedarville. Records indicate at least one child, a son Charles born in 1852. After the death of Timothy after 1880, Sarah married David Young, a shoemaker in 1884 at the age of 52.

Religion Should our thoughts engage
Amidst our Youthful bloom
Twill fit us for declining age
And for the awful tomb
Preserve me from the snares of sin
Through my remaining days
And in me let each virtue shine
To my redeemers Praise
