This sampler has the wonderful charm of a young schoolgirl sampler, with a house, little birds, dogs and many flowers; however, Ann Irvin was 39 years old when she worked her needle. It is quite rare to find a sampler made by a woman of such a late age in life, as this was a skill taught to young girls in schools.

This sampler was accompanied by a note from the original backboard, written by Ann's granddaughter Alice Irvin Grange (Photo #8). The stitching date of this sampler was determined from knowing that Ann died in 1891 at the age of 81.
