Rebckah Mcdonald

Scottish Samplers

Rebckah Mcdonald, age 14

1823

Dundee, Angus

Description:

There is a fun folksy quality to this sampler. For instance the trees are placed in a unique perspective with symmetrical placement we (think) was intended to show depth. Item by item, the piece is almost perfectly balanced. The major exceptions are the animals, specifically the dogs and rabbits by the hillocks and the birds in the trees. Rebekah's Ark of the Covenant is nicely labeled, and is flanked by matching angels and a representation of the Golden Candlestick.

Familial initials: DM, GRD, JM, RM, GM, WM, MM, DM, HM, DM, MG, WD, JT, RE, CW, RD, IR

Size (W x H): 15 1/4 x 18 3/4 inches framed

Stitches: Cross, eyelet, chain

Media: Silk on wool

Genealogy:

Rebekah is most likely the oldest child of Duncan McDonald, a wright, and Rankine Davidson of Dundee and was born 16 April 1809. Siblings were George (1810), William (1812), Mary (1814) and Duncan (1815).

Rebekah married Peter Sanderson, a cabinet maker, on 12 March 1830, also in Dundee. The 1841 census lists just two children: Georgina (1832) and James (1840). The 1851 Scottish Census of Forfarshire indicates five children still living with their parents at "Sanderson's Land Mid Kirk Wyle": Peter (1838), James (1840), William (1842), Jessie Clark (1845) and Duncan (1849). Rebekah died in St. Andrews at the age of 70 in 1880.

Verse:

Come heavenly Dove with influences sweet
O come and make my spirit meet
To dwell with thee in heaven above
Or with thy friends here to hope in love
