Sarah is a beautiful addition to our collection of Norfolk samplers. The border of the sampler is a beautiful bow-tied garland of many different flowers. Note the fantasticly realistic butterfly in the upper corner. The central part of the sampler has three alphabets and some numerals separated by lovely floral bands. In the very center is the Norfolk lozenge band with deer, dogs and trees. While the lozenge format is typical, the configuration of double deer is not and can be compared to S.A. Dady, Ann Hanshaw, Elizth Scott and Susanna Tagg. The bottom of the sampler has a verse and signature. The sampler is beautifully stitched and the colors are bright and true.
Size (W x H): 12 x 14 1/4 inches
Stitches: Cross, cross-over-one, satin, chain, outline, eyelet
Media: Silk on wool
While there are several alternatives, we like this possibility the most: Sarah Partridge, born in 1820 in North Lopham, Norfolk, was 19 when she married George Garrard in Thetford.
Give first to God, the flower of thy youth,
Take for thy guide the blessed word of truth
Adorn thyself with grace prize wisdom more
Than all the pearls, upon the Indian shore
Scorn the deluding arts, that most bewitches
And place thy hopes, in everlasting riches
